Sleeping During Long Travels

I have recently read a health article on sleeping during long travels, and would like to highlight that sleeping a lot during long-distance travel be it to our places of interest or for business purposes, and whether by plane or by car, can increase the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

DVT is a blood clot that forms in the deep veins of our legs which can travel unnoticed through the blood stream and lodge in the brain, lungs, heart or other areas causing severe damage to our organs. Noticeable symptoms include pain and tenderness, swelling, redness and increased warmth in one leg.

To avoid sleeping too much during long travels, it cautions that travelers are advised to get up and walk around at least every two hours, and to avoid sleeping more than four hours at a time. For those who are unable to do so, they should extend both their legs and exercise while seated. They should also drink more water or juices, wear loose-fitting clothing, eat light meals and limit their alcohol consumption.

For health and wellness sake, the conclusion is to avoid sleeping too much during long travels.

Want a deep sea adventure holiday?

Like the idea of swimming alongside a graceful manta ray or coming face-to-face with all kinds of undersea creatures?

Well, whether we are in the reefs of South China Sea or the far-flung Caribbean islands, there are hundreds of diving destinations just waiting for us to explore. So how do we choose? It's always best to start at home. For Malaysians, it is good to start at some of Malaysia's top dive sites like Redang, Perhentian, Tioman and Sipadan.

Whatever it is, get ourselves certified as a diver first, once through, the ocean is our oyster! In this case, we may need to look out for PADI (i.e. short for Professional Association of Diving Instructors) dive courses, which offer recognised diving certificates. It is good to know that recreational scuba diving is a sport that opens to any age, size and gender, i.e. just about anyone can become a diver.

With this, and wherever we go for our future diving holiday, we can rent scuba gear from any dive centre. Sound good to be adventurous and want to try it out, right? Once you start diving, I believe you'll discover the natural beauty of the underwater world, and a deeper appreciation for the environment.

On the same note, scuba diving is believed to be the "new yoga," as it gives similar results, i.e. that our body becomes relaxed whilst swimming in a gravity-free environment. Likewise, doing slow breathing exercises during diving is just like meditation, and observing beautiful sea life is stimulating, don’t you agree with me?

Think it is time for us to plan a diving excursion to places of interest now!

About Access America's Traveler Frustration Index

The released of the latest Access America's Traveler Frustration Index which was conducted in August, shows statistics with frustration of airlines down but concern over overall prices up has caught my attention on their finding that women are significantly more frustrated with traveling than are men on the whole. An excerpt of the report reads as follows:

“Leisure travelers (55.2) are more frustrated than are business travelers (52.9). Women (57) are significantly more frustrated with traveling than are men (53.2) on the whole.
Other specific findings of note:

Women (61%) are considerably more likely than men (50%) to be frustrated with the cost of airline, cruise or train tickets. Similarly, women (26%) are more likely than men (17%) to be frustrated with difficulty booking their trip.”

The report basically did not touch on why women frustrated more than men, but I am of the opinion that it boils down to “Time, Money and Expectation” factors. Of course, for women traveling alone, security is of paramount importance besides a few gender specific issues.

zuji.com.hk hotels destination linkI believe the inequality of pay between men and women and jobs that pay well which have a higher fraction of men while the jobs that pay lower wages have more women is an obvious fact as far as working world is concerned.

As to time, I think women especially those married ones are generally more time pressed than men due to the fact that they have more to handle for their family besides their work life if any.

Statistics from the Travel Industry Association has shown that women account for about 43% of business travelers and that they tend to be well-heeled consumers with higher expectations than men. It comes no surprised that why hotel are improving on aspect in security, i.e. have bell staff escort women guest to their rooms or assigning rooms near elevators, shortening their walk down isolated hallways. We may also notice that Hilton hotels now offer Crabtree & Evelyn products to cater more fully to women's preferences, while Marriott and Renaissance hotels now offer Bath & Body Works aromatherapy kind of products. Another extreme is that we may also find some hotels have a women only floor and have hotel rooms stocked with items of special appeal to only female guests.

I would say the above are some of the related factors at play on why women are more frustrated with traveling than are men. Let me know if there are any others.

PS: The word Travel is derived from the French: travail, which means "labor," "anguish," and "fatigue," who knows this may be a hidden factors too!

USA Phone Book Resource

Do you wish to find out the contact numbers for your long time lost touched friends in US? Or perhaps you want to engage a service provider over there but seem no one can help you on this?

Well, I just find out a useful online phone book resource which allows one to look up for information about any phone number in the US. To what I know this is the only online phone book database that contains information from the white pages, yellow pages, public records and telephone service providers so far.

How this USA Phone Book works is that we could search by area codes as listed or clicks on the links as provided, hence one will have no problem to look up for cell, residential, business, unpublished and unlisted phone numbers in US!

I would say this resource is very good for those who wish to perform a background check for certain purpose too!

Interesting Places - World’s Cities

Which interesting places or a city should I visit and what are the things to take note of?

Well, what I can say is don’t go and expect the same attitudes, the same accommodation, the same food, the same treatment from your favorite hotel, the same grids of streets, and others that you would find at home. Do your research and go with an open mind, but of course be sensible to the local culture and etiquette.

Despite many cities are packed with all types of restaurants and hotels and with entertainment of every description, yet you may find some with few obvious sights to attract visitors. For example, if you decide to visit the legendary Timbuktu in Mali or the entrancing Ethiopian city of Harar, you should not expect to find night-clubs or five-star hotels, instead you should go with the flow only then you could fully appreciate them. In fact, the experience or the enjoyment that we gained from visiting cities in different countries is very different, or perhaps challenging!

One of the travel tips that I learn is to gain some knowledge of the customs, culture and history and if got the time try to learn some of the language. My travel friend, Richer Choo and myself feel that even with just knowing how to say ‘Thank you’, ‘Good morning’ or ‘How are you’ in the local language is suffice to get you off on the right footing.

However, it is always good to consult your tourism’s official for advice and precautions to take. You may not aware or do not agree with many that Algiers is one of the worst cities due to its poor infrastructure, instability as well as its known for crime!

What are the world’s largest cities, you may ask? Well, Tokyo, Mumbai, New York, Mexico City…. In terms of the cities population, there is a lot of difference from city to city, some even with a population of less than 2,500, which I guess you may think it is more of a village than a city, right? That is St David’s, Britain’s smallest city that lies in the wild and beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park!

Whatever it is just make sure you have the required travel insurance, the appropriate vaccination, the visas, and not to forget to pack the right clothes for the time of the year!

Have fun and enjoy travel to the world's interesting places!

Airport Shutdown in Phuket

What an experience, is it something good or no good? From what I see the recent airport shutdown in Phuket had caused not only disruption in flights but an unforgettable experience to some travelers though.

The incident happened after the country anti-government protesters went onto runway to disrupt flights.

According to those Malaysian travelers who had stranded but finally get to fly back, the experience was scary. They claimed that although it was a relief for them to be back home, they were still shaken by the experience.

Luggage ProsA holidaymaker who went to Phuket with his wife for their wedding anniversary, and who wanted to be identified as Arthur, said that they did not go out of their hotel because there was no transportation as bus service had stopped. At the same time, they were worried when told that their flight back had been cancelled due to the riots.

Another 20 year-old student said watching the scenes of the rioting over the television there was a really scary experience. A maritime officer said there were about 100 protesters waiting at the airport when he arrived there that evening with a lot of policemen maintaining order then.

The disruption had also caused some travelers stranded to stay for another night in the resort town.

The concerned carrier could not state the number of travelers who had been affected by flight cancellations. The daily flight which was supposed to depart could not take off as it did not receive clearance to do so. The riot had also forced another airport in Hat Yat to be closed.

Can we say this is something unforgettable and scary and with lost of money?
